Today, as we celebrate World Water Day, it is important we continue to push for global water security for all. Both social and technological innovation is required to ensure we find ways to meet water needs everywhere. The United Nations released their World Water Report today, and the report’s main theme is for global society to value water.
At Hello Rain, we are valuing water by directly tackling the challenges and opportunities for scaling rainwater harvesting. Climate change has exacerbated and changed the way we predict precipitation patterns, therefore, changing the way rainwater is being collected.
What we are building at Hello Rain, is a spatial intelligence tool to predict and plan how we manage rainwater resources. Half the global population experiences water scarcity for at least one month of the year. We want to build more certainty on the way water is managed by local governments, households, and farmers.
The rainwater calculator we are in the process of scaling Jamaica shows users what the rainwater harvesting potential is of a building's rooftop. Our calculator tells the user the historical average rainfall per day, per month, and per year of a given geographic area.
As a start, our calculator works in Kingston and Clarendon, Jamaica. We also have an exciting partnership, though, you will have to wait until the next newsletter to hear who we will be working with to scale our calculator.
To understand why we see the potential and value in rainwater harvesting, check out our first newsletter article by our Co-Founder Dr. Kala Fleming, Rainwater harvesting- Get the most from every drop - Hello Rain's Newsletter (substack.com).
